Poppa Cigar

Poppa Cigar

Poppa Cigar is a 10 member Afrobeat/Afrofunk Orchestra with a five piece horn section (including a flute player and sometimes a sousaphone).  The band was formed last year because no one on Boston’s North Shore was playing Afrobeat. I’ve been inspired more recently by Boston’s multi-instrumentalist and composer, Adam Clark and his various projects – The Boston Afrobeat Society, Full Tang and The Superpowers but I first experienced live Afrobeat in Montreal circa 2003.  There in front of me was a massive band with a huge horn section – they all danced, they all sang – and the music had a message and vibe that really connected to something deeper in me. I had never heard this approach to what is basically long form Funk with an emphasis on complex rhythms originating in West Africa, but I instantly understood it and realized that it was something I could relate to on multiple levels, especially since I was a drummer before I was ever a guitarist. Having played in an Afrobeat dance band called The 5th Pocket in Western MA for a couple years, I really got to dive deep into a wide range of Afrobeat – the music of Tony Allen, Antibalas, Fela and Femi Kuti, King Sunny Ade etc. The Afro-inspired band known as Shokazoba was gaining momentum during my time in Western, Ma and I don’t think I missed any of their performances. ( Anyway, finally forming a band to do some of the music that has shaped me and inspired me over the years with people who share the same passion is very exciting.

The following is a little write up about us by Minglewood Tavern which I think describes the band nicely:

“Come see all of your favorite Gloucester musicians in this new, high-octane Afrobeat, Afrofunk, world-tour of a band!

Heavily influenced by bands like The Motet, Fela Kuti, and Rubblebucket, this fresh Gloucester sensation will get you up and dancing with a hypnotizing mix of African beats and classic funk feel. The ten-piece band is percussion based, groove heavy, and party ready with a riot of improvisation to rock the body and inspire the soul. Top it off with a tight horn section and tasty vocals by Renee Dupuis and Joe Wilkins and this band is ready to raise the energy to the roof and beyond.”

Members: Joe Wilkins, Dennis Monagle, Jamie and Tim Klopotoski, Justin Lopes, Luke Conlin, Laura Heinrichs, Carlos Menezes and Zach Gorrell
